Reading blogs/forums without commenting on them serves to expand the understanding in the lurker, and also delivers a sense of belonging even if they do not actively engage with the material. Additionally, blogging/posting to forums implies an assumed audience of readers even if they are not visible as commentators, and the semi-public nature of the activity ensures that the blogger is aware of the possibility of disagreement, censure or approval from their readers, enhancing their critical faculties and writing skills.
